These are handmade knives made of high carbon steel. What this means is that the owner must take care of these much like they would care for a cast iron skillet, and much unlike they would care for a stainless steel knife, which is to say very little or no care required.
Keeping these tools dry when not in use is of utmost importance. Personally, I wipe my knives off after every use, and I never leave them damp, wet, and especially never submerged in water or liquid. Mineral oil is also handy to have around as it is great for natural handle material and not damaging to the steel.
A natural patina will often develop on high carbon knives, usually differing depending on what the tool is being used for, and is completely normal. Some folks even consider it a footprint of where the tool has been. If any rust ever does accumulate on the steel, it can often be easily removed with high grit sandpaper (400+).
